Literary Terms

| allegory | a narrative that serves as an extended metaphor (ex. The Crucible) |
| alliteration | the repetition of consonant sounds in words close together |
| allusion | a reference in a literary work to a person, place, or thing in history or another work of literature |
| antagonist | a character in a story or poem who deceives, frustrates, or works against the main character (protagonist) |
| connotation | an implied idea or quality that is associated with a word but is not part of the word's actual meaning |
| denotation | the exact meaning of a word, without the feelings or suggestions that the word may imply |
| dialogue | the conversation between characters in a drama or narrative |
| figurative language | does not mean exactly what it says, but instead forces the reader to make an imaginative leap in order to comprehend an author's point |
| genre | a type of literature grouped by similar characteristics (ex. "The Fall of the House of Usher" belongs in the Gothic genre) |
| hyperbole | an extravagant exaggeration |
| metaphor | a statement that says that one thing is something else, but, literally, it is not. |
| narrator | one who tells a story; the speaker or the 'voice' of an oral or written work |
| parable | a brief and often simple narrative that illustrates a moral or religious lesson |
| personification | when human qualities are given to a non-human entity |
| point of view | Either the vantage point from which a narrative is told (first, second, third person) OR the pov can refer to the opinions expressed by the author |
| protagonist | the main character or lead figure in a novel, play, story, or poem |
| setting | the time, place, physical details, and circumstances in which a situation occurs |
| simile | a comparison between two unalike objects by connecting them with the words "like" or "as" |
| symbol | a word or object that stand for another word or object |
| theme | a thought or idea about a topic that the author presents to the reader |
| anecdote | a short narrative account of an amusing, unusual, revealing, or interesting even |
