Gr 5 Reference Books

Important vocabulary for understanding and using reference books.

TermDefinition
Thesaurus A book that lists similar (synonyms)words. Also lists opposite words (antonyms).
Encyclopedia A set of books with articles containing basic information on a wide range of topics.
Atlas A book containing maps and other geographical information.
Almanac A book published each year that contains quick facts about the weather and various current topics such as sports and entertainment.
Dictionary A book listing words, how they are pronounced, and what they mean.
Guide Words Words listed at the top or bottom of each page in a reference book to help in locating information.
Index Provides an alphabetical list of topics.
Table of Contents A sequential list of chapters in a book.
