Base A substance that produces hydroxide ions (OH-) in solution; these solutions have a pH over 7
Hydronium Ion The ion (H3O+) that makes a solution acidic
Indicator An organic compound that changes color in an acidic or basic solution
Neutralization Reaction A chemical reaction between an acid and a base in which the acid and base combine to produce salt and water
pH A measure of hydronium ions concentration in solution; its expressed on the scale of 0 to 14
pickling A process that removes impurities from surfaces of steel and other other metals by dipping them in hydrochloric acid
salt a compound formed during a neutralization reaction when negative ions from an acid combine with positive ions from a base
soap an organic salt made by reacting fats or oils with a strong base such as NaOH
strong acid an acid that ionizes almost completely in solution
strong base a base that dissociates completely solution
titration process in which a solution of known concentration is used to determine the concentration of an acid or basic solution
