Acid/Bases Review
Test review over Acids and Bases
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Acid | A substance that produces Hydrogen ions (H+) in solution; these solutions have a pH less than 7 |
Base | A substance that produces hydroxide ions (OH-) in solution; these solutions have a pH over 7 |
Hydronium Ion | The ion (H3O+) that makes a solution acidic |
Indicator | An organic compound that changes color in an acidic or basic solution |
Neutralization Reaction | A chemical reaction between an acid and a base in which the acid and base combine to produce salt and water |
pH | A measure of hydronium ions concentration in solution; its expressed on the scale of 0 to 14 |
pickling | A process that removes impurities from surfaces of steel and other other metals by dipping them in hydrochloric acid |
salt | a compound formed during a neutralization reaction when negative ions from an acid combine with positive ions from a base |
soap | an organic salt made by reacting fats or oils with a strong base such as NaOH |
strong acid | an acid that ionizes almost completely in solution |
strong base | a base that dissociates completely solution |
titration | process in which a solution of known concentration is used to determine the concentration of an acid or basic solution |
weak acid | an acid that partially ionizes in solution |
weak base | a base that partially dissociates in solution |
