Chapter 17 Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| mechanical wave | disturbance in matter that carries energy from 1 place to another. |
| medium | the material through which the wave travels. |
| crest | the highest point in the resting position. |
| trough | the lowest point in the resting position. |
| transverse wave | a wave that causes the medium to vibrate at right angels to the direction that the wave is traveling. |
| compression | an area where the medium is placed close together. |
| rarefaction | where the medium is spread out. |
| longitudinal wave | vibration of the medium is parallel to the direction the wave is traveling. |
| surface wave | waves that travel on the surface separated two media. |
| periodic motion | motion that repeats at a regular time interval. |
| period | the time required for the motion to go one full cycle. |
| frequency | the number of complete cycles in a given time. |
| hertz | cycles per second. |
| wavelength | the distance between a point on one wave and the same point on the next cycle on the wave. |
| amplitude | maximum displacement of the medium from its rest position. |
| reflection | when a wave bounces off a surface that it cannot pass through. |
| refraction | the bending of a wave as it enters a new medium. |
| diffraction | the bending of a wave as it moves around an obstacle. |
| interference | when two or more waves combine or overlap. |
| constructive interference | when two or more waves combine to form a larger displacement. |
| destructive interference | two or more waves combine to form a smaller displacement. |
| standing wave | a wave that appears to stand in one place. |
| node | the point on a wave that has no displacement. |
| antinode | a point where a crest occurs midway bewteen two points. |
| electromagnetic waves | transverse waves consisting of different electric fields. |
| electric field | region of space exerts electric forces on charged particles. |
| magnetic field | a region of space that produces magnetic forces. |
| electromagnetic radiation | transfer of energy through electromagnetic waves. |
| photoelectric effect | emission of electrons caused by light striking an object |
| photons | packets of electromagnetic energy. |
| intensity | the rate which a waves energy flows through a unit of area. |
| electromagnetic spectrum | full range of frequencies of electromagnetic radiation. |
| amplitude modulation | amplitude of wave is varied |
| frequency modulation | frequency of wave is modified |
| thermograms | uses infrared waves to detect heat. |
