Chemical Bonds

Chemical Formula A representation showing exactly how many and what kind of elements are present
Ion A charged atom
Ionization The process of an atom gaining a charge by gaining or losing electrons
Chemical Bond The force that holds atoms together in a compound
Ionic Bond The bond formed from the attraction between an oppositely charged cation and anion
Covalent Bond The bond formed by attraction between atoms that share electrons
Molecule A neutral compound formed by covalent bonds
Polar Molecule A molecule that is overall neutral but has local charge differences within it caused by unequal sharing of electrons
Nonpolar Molecule A molecule that is overall neutral with no local charge differences within it
Polyatomic Ion An compound made with an overall electrical charge
Oxidation Number The charge on an ion
