What are Psychoactive Drugs? Any chemical substance that alters normal bodily function by targeting synapses in the central nervous system to enhance, weaken, and/or garble experience and action
How do psychoactive drugs work?
Agonist Increases activity at a synapse
Antagonist Decrease activity at a synapse
Reuptake Inhibitor Slows return of released transmitters
What are the classes psychoactive drugs? Stimulants, depressants, narcotics, hallucinogen, and marijuana
What are examples of stimulants? Amphetamine, Methamphetamine, Cocaine, Caffeine, and Nicotine
What type are stimulants? Reuptake inhibitor and affects dopamine or serotonin
What are the effects of stimulants? Enhanced attention, confusion, impulsiveness, impaired attention, higher heart rate, higher blood pressure, higher body temperature, tremors, convulsions, lung damage, heart attack
What are examples of depressants? Alcohol, tranquilizers, rohypnol and GHB, and phencyclidine
What type are depressants? Agonist and affects GABA
What are the effects of depressants? Relaxed muscles, reduced inhibitions, impaired memory, impaired motor control, unconsciousness, liver and organ damage, and death
What are examples of narcotics? Opiates
What type are narcotics? Agonist and affects endorphin
What are the effects of narcotics? Feelings of happiness, warmth, and contentment, abated pain, nausea, and withdrawal from the world
What are examples of hallucinogens? Certain mushrooms and plants (e.g. peyote), lysergic acid diethyl amide (LSD), and MDMA (ecstasy)
What type are hallucinogens? Agonist/Antagonist
What are the effects of hallucinogens? Distorted sensation, dreamlike state, increased energy, increased anxiety, depression, impaired attention, impaired memory, and impaired sleep
What is the active ingredient? Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)
What type is marijuana? Antagonist and imitates anandamine and 2-AG
What are the effects of marijuana? Impaired memory, sensory distortions, decreased drive, feelings of calm, softened pain, reduced nausea, suppressed tremors, and decreased cell loss after stroke
