Genres/Types of Literature

QuestionAnswer
NARRATIVE a story or account of events, whether fiction or nonfiction
POEM literature written in verse (poetic form) that tries to tell experiences, ideas or emotions in a vivid and imaginative way. Poetry is the antonym of prose.
PROSE ordinary speech and writing in sentence/paragraph form
NONFICTION prose works that are true or based in fact (biography, informational writing)
BIOGRAPHY a book about a person’s life
FICTION made up, invented, imaginative stories
SHORT STORY a story with few characters and one main plot
FOLKTALE traditional story passed down through generations
TALL TALE a story so exaggerated that it is unbelievable
MYTH story to explain why something is the way it is
LEGEND stories that are not true; often feature extraordinary heroism and exaggerated details
FABLE story meant to teach the reader a lesson
SCIENCE FICTION a story that deals with scientific knowledge or technology that does not really exist
FANTASY a story that deals with supernatural or unnatural events or characters
HISTORICAL FICTION made up story that takes place during a real event or time in history
MYSTERY a story that involves a crime or a puzzling event that is solved at the end
