Geography and Key Terms for 3rd grade Core Knowledge unit

TermDefinition
meanders the winding, zig-zaggy snake shape of a river
delta a flat, shallow triangle of soil near the mouth of a river
bridge point a narrow place on a river, where it is easier to cross
reservoir a man-made lake often formed by building a dam
estuary where the river (fresh) water mixes with the ocean (salt) water
tributary a smaller river that joins a larger river
source the beginning of a river- usually a mountain or lake
oxbow when a meander gets cut off, a lake forms in the old bend
mouth where the river opens and ends at the ocean or sea
drainage basin the area of land drained by a river and its tributaries
