English Figurative Language Review Terms

simile a comparison of two unlike things using “like,” “as,” or “than”
metaphor a direct comparison of two things; one thing is the other thing
personification giving human characteristics to an animal or object
hyperbole exaggeration for effect, vast overstatement
idiom a saying in one culture that does not translate or work in another
imagery use of vivid language that appeals to the five senses
alliteration repeated consonant sounds at the beginnings of words (like a tongue twister)
rhyme words with the same or similar ending sounds (cake-rake)
onomatopoeia a word that imitates a sound (crash, hiss)
repetition words, images, or ideas are repeated in a work for emphasis
rhyme pattern/scheme rhyme arranged in a repeating pattern, usually marked by letters (abab)
