| metaphor | a direct comparison of two things; one thing is the other thing |
| personification | giving human characteristics to an animal or object |
| hyperbole | exaggeration for effect, vast overstatement |
| idiom | a saying in one culture that does not translate or work in another |
| imagery | use of vivid language that appeals to the five senses |
| alliteration | repeated consonant sounds at the beginnings of words (like a tongue twister) |
| rhyme | words with the same or similar ending sounds (cake-rake) |
| onomatopoeia | a word that imitates a sound (crash, hiss) |
| repetition | words, images, or ideas are repeated in a work for emphasis |
| rhyme pattern/scheme | rhyme arranged in a repeating pattern, usually marked by letters (abab) |
