5th Grade Winds!

5th Grade Earth Science

QuestionAnswer
What is wind? Air in motion
Is wind a form of matter? Does is have mass? Yes, yes
What happens when air is in motion? It moves things around
Is air always in motion? No, it can be still (not moving)
What causes air to be in motion? Energy
Where does wind get its energy? The Sun
Of which elements is air made? Air is made of molecules of oxygen, nitrogen, and a few other gases.
Are wind and air the same thing? Why or why not? They are not the same, because wind is air in motion and air is not always in motion.
What happens when air molecules move about and hit land? Energy is transferred from the land to the air molecules.
When energy is transferred to air molecules do they fly around faster or slower? faster
When air molecules fly around faster do they get hotter or cooler? hotter
When air molecules hit each other harder, do they push each other closer together or farther apart? farther apart
When air molecules hit each other over the ocean, they don't hit each other hard, so the molecules are ____er together. closer
When the air is cool, molecules move at a ____er speed, while molecules move at a ____er speed when the air is hot. slower, faster
Hot air is less _____ than an equal volume of cool air. dense
Why is hot air less dense than cool air? Hot air has fast-moving molecules that are moving farther apart (less dense). Cool air molecules are slow-moving and are closer together (more dense).
Less dense, warm air ____ and cool, denser air _____. rises, falls
What causes a convection current? The uneven heating of Earth's surface.
Wind can blow in two directions, from ____ to ___ and from ___ to land. land, sea sea, land
What causes a convection current to change direction? When the sun goes down, the convection current changes direction and blows from land to sea. Water cools slowly and land cools rapidly, making the water warmer than land at night. Wind blows from cold, dense (land) to warm, less dense (water) at night.
Define energy transfer The movement of energy from one place to another, or the change of energy from one form to another.
Convection current A circular movement of fluid (air) that is the result of uneven heating of the fluid.
