Unit 5-Electricity
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| electrical charge | basic property of all matter; occurs when electrons are transferred between materials |
| electroscope | a device used to detect electric charge |
| static electricity | the accumulation of excess electric charge on an object; charges at rest |
| conduction | charging by direct contact |
| induction | charging by indirect contact |
| friction | charging by rubbing |
| electric field | the region surrounding an electric charge |
| current | flow of charges in a single direction |
| direct current | current flows in only one direction through a wire |
| alternating current | current changes direction in regular pattern |
| resistance | the tendency for a material to oppose the flow of electrons |
| ohms | unit used to measure resistance |
| amperes | unit used to measure current |
| volts | unit used to measure voltage |
| Ohm’s Law | describes the relationship between voltage, current, and resistance in a circuit |
| conductor | a material in which electrons are able to move easily |
| insulator | a material in which electrons are not able to move easily |
| parallel circuit | circuit in which current has multiple paths for current to flow through |
| series circuit | circuit in which current has only one loop or path to flow through |
