TermDefinition
Conflict A problem or struggle within a character or between characters in a piece of literature
dialogue A conversation between two or more people or the words spoken by a character in a story or play
caption a short explanation accompanying an illustration or photograph
direct quotation A report of the exact words of an author or a speaker and are always surrounded by quotation marks
heading A title, subtitle, or topic put at the head of a page, chapter, or section of a printed or written work
foreshadowing Clues or hints about something that is going to happen later in the story; Authors use this to build suspense or to prepare the reader for what happens later
