QuestionAnswer
Law of Bergone and tribondeau 1906 - It states that the radiosensitivity of cells is directly proportional to their reproductive activity and inversely proportional to their degree of differentiation.
Oxygen Enhancement Ratio Radiation dose required to cause biologic response without O2 OER= ---------------------------------------------------------- Radiation dose required to cause biologic response with O2
What is Fractionation? Equal doses planned out over time. Deterministic.
Protraction is? Radiation dose over a long period of time, but its not equal.Protagonistic.
Relative Biological Effectiveness formula. Effect of a dose of x rays (250 KeV for ex.) RBE= -------------------------------------------------------------- Effect of a dose of another type of radiation delivered under the same circumstances.
Non-Linear - Threshold (Non Stochastic/ Deterministic Effects) Large dose/ Short time ; early effects, short term somatic. An increase in the dose will increase severity of response.
Linear- Non - Threshold (Stochastic/ Probabilistic Effect) Small dose/ Long time ; long term somatic effects. Cancers, leukemia, cataracts, Genetic effects are suspected. An increase in dose will increase likelihood but not severity of response.
LD 50/30 Lethal dose of radiation that will kill 50% of the population in 30 days. 700 RADs for whole population.
Stages of radiation sickness? 1. Prodromal or initial- N-V-D 2. Latent- Fine for now. 3. Manifest illness- Very sick. 4. Recovery or Death- self explanatory.
Cellular Responce The visible or detectable structural or functional changes produced by a given dose within a given period of time.
RBE? Relative Biological Effectiveness, RBE escalates as LET increases.
Low LET X ray and Gamma, travels far, not very damaging.
Has a moderately high LET Beta particle, travels further than Alpha but not quite as damaging.
Has a high LET Alpha particle, doesn't travel very far, very damaging.
LET is Linear energy transfer- The average energy deposited per unit length of track.
How does ionizing radiation damage living systems By ionizing (removing electrons from) the atoms comprising the molecular structures of these systems.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
