| Term | Definition |

| Near-death Experience | An altered state of consciousness reported after a close brush with death, often similar to drug induced hallucinations. |
| Addiction | Compulsive drug craving and use, despite adverse consequences. |
| Withdrawl | The discomfort and distress that follow discontinuing the use of an addictive drug |
| Tolerance | The diminishing effect with regular use of the same dose of a drug requiring the user to take larger and larger doses before experiencing the drugs effect |
| Alcohol Dependence | Alcohol use marked by tolerance and withdrawal if suspended, and a drive to continue use. |
| Hypnosis | Social interaction in which one person suggests to another that certain perceptions, feelings, thoughts or behaviors will spontaneously occur. Hints: Can relieve pain, inhibits all brain activity. |
| Stimulus | Any event or situation that evokes a response. (See lightning; anticipate loud noise, wincing) |
| Positive Reinforcement | Increasing behaviors by presenting positive reinforces. |
| Negative Reinforcement | Increasing behaviors by stopping or reducing negative stimuli.(increase behavior, reduce negative behavior) |
| Punishment | An event that tends to decrease the behavior that it follows. |
| Observational Learning | Learning by observing others. |
| Modeling | The process of observing and imitating a specific behavior |
| Zygote | The fertilized egg; it enters a 2-week period of rapid cell division and develops into an embryo.(This is the first stage of three in prenatal development) |
| Extinction | The diminishing of a conditioned response. |
| Shaping | An operant conditioning procedure in which reinforces guide behavior toward closer and closer approximations of the desired behavior. (operant conditioning, desired behavior) |
