project n(c). a carefully planned piece of work to get information about something, to build something, to improve something etc The scheme will now be extended after a successful pilot project (=a small trial to test if an idea will be successful).
statistic n. [singular] a single number which represents a fact or measurement. The statistic comes from a study recently conducted by the British government.
stress n. worry [uncountable and countable] continuous feelings of worry about your work or personal life, that prevent you from relaxing Janet's been under a lot of stress since her mother's illness.
sum n(c) money an amount of money. the sum of £4000 Bill wants to spend a large sum on modernizing the farm.
promote vt. encourage to help something to develop or increase. Fertilizer promotes leaf growth.
status n. the official legal position or condition of a person, group, country etc. These documents have no legal status in Britain.
professional adj. relating to a job that needs special education and training. What professional qualifications does he have?
subsequent adj. happening or coming after something else These skills were passed on to subsequent generations.
prior adj. existing or arranged before something else or before the present situation [= previous] Changes may not be made without the prior approval of the council.
undertake vt. to accept that you are responsible for a piece of work, and start to do it. Dr Johnson undertook the task of writing a comprehensive English dictionary.
retain vt. to keep something or continue to have something. You have the right to retain possession of the goods.
parameter n. a set of fixed limits that control the way that something should be done. The inquiry has to stay within the parameters laid down by Congress.
parallel n. a relationship or similarity between two things, especially things that exist or happen in different places or at different times. There are many parallels between Yeats and the Romantic poets.
phase n(c). one of the stages of a process of development or change. The first phase of renovations should be finished by January.
predict vt. to say that something will happen, before it happens. It is difficult to predict what the long-term effects of the accident will be.
regime n(c). a particular system - used especially when talking about a previous system, or one that has just been introduced. Under the new regime, all sheep and cattle will be regularly tested for disease.
summary adj. Not including needless details or formalities; brief. In addition, short summary statements can be used to denote events, personal strengths, and so on.
principal adj. most important [= main] His principal reason for making the journey was to visit his family.
series n. series of something several events or actions of a similar type that happen one after the other. The police are investigating a series of attacks in the area.
resolve vt. to find a satisfactory way of dealing with a problem or difficulty. Barnet was desperate for money to resolve his financial problems.
