| option | n(c). keep/leave your options open to wait before making a decision. I'm keeping all my options open for the moment. |
| integrate | v. if two or more things integrate, or if you integrate them, they combine or work together in a way that makes something more effective. Colourful illustrations are integrated into the text. |
| emerge | vi. to appear or come out from somewhere. The sun emerged from behind the clouds. |
| implicate | vt. to show or suggest that someone is involved in a crime or dishonest act. Three police officers are implicated in the cover-up. |
| implement | vt. to take action or make changes that you have officially decided should happen. We have decided to implement the committee's recommendations in full. |
| despite | prep. used to say that something happens or is true even though something else might have prevented it [= in spite of] Despite all our efforts to save the school, the authorities decided to close it. |
| debate | n discussion of a particular subject that often continues for a long time and in which people express different opinions. There has been widespread public debate over the introduction of genetically modified food. |
| dimension | n(c). a part of a situation or a quality involved in it [= aspect] His coaching has added another dimension to my game. |
| grant | v. formal to give someone something or allow them to have something that they have asked for. The council have granted him permission to build on the site. |
| take somebody/something for granted | to expect that someone or something will always be there when you need them and never think how important or useful they are. Bridget was careful not to take him for granted. |
| hence | adv. for this reason. The cost of transport is a major expense for an industry. Hence factory location is an important consideration. |
| domestic | adj. relating to or happening in one particular country and not involving any other countries. the booming domestic economy |
| ethnic | adj. relating to a particular race, nation, or tribe and their customs and traditions. The school teaches pupils from different ethnic groups. |
| output | n. the amount of goods or work produced by a person, machine, factory etc. Output is up 30% on last year. |
| impose | vt. if someone in authority imposes a rule, punishment, tax etc, they force people to accept it. The government imposed a ban on the sale of ivory. |
| internal | adj. within a particular country [= domestic; ≠ external] We have no interest in interfering in the internal affairs of other countries. |
| overall | adj. considering or including everything. The overall cost of the exhibition was £400,000. |
| occupy | vt. if something occupies you or your time, you are busy doing it. Only six percent of police time is occupied with criminal incidents. |
| label | n(c). a piece of paper or another material that is attached to something and gives information about it. It says 'Dry clean' on the label. |
| mechanism | nc. part of a machine or a set of parts that does a particular job. the brake mechanism a clock mechanism |
| job | n. work [countable] the regular paid work that you do for an employer. Do you enjoy your job? |
| investigate | v. [intransitive and transitive] to try to find out the truth about or the cause of something such as a crime, accident, or scientific problem The study investigates the impact of violent TV programming on children. |
| hypothesis | n. [countable] an idea that is suggested as an explanation for something, but that has not yet been proved to be true [= theory] One hypothesis is that the victim fell asleep while driving. |
| goal | n. something that you hope to achieve in the future [= aim] They achieved their goal of increasing sales by five percent. |
| error | n. [uncountable and countable] a mistake The government has committed a serious error. |
| obvious | adj. easy to notice or understand For obvious reasons the police cannot give any more details about the case. |
