Science Energy Unit

Test 1

energy The ability to cause objects to change, move, or work
gravitational potential energy (GPE) energy that is stored due to an objects mass or height GPE- mgh(mass x acceleration of gravity x height)
kinetic energy (KE) Energy of motion KE= 1/2 mv to the second (depends on mass and velocity (speed of an object))
potential energy (PE) Energy of position Stored energy Ex: at the top of a waterfall
energy transfermation The change of energy from one type to another Ex: PE to KE
energy transfer Transfer of energy from one object to another Ex: transfer KE of a moving hammer to a moving nail
friction A force that apposes motion when two objects touch/rub against each other.
thermal energy KE due to random vibrations and movements of molecules and atoms
