Psychiatric drugs

DrugInfoSide effects
Citalopram SSRI. Depression and panic disorder. Causes long QT. Mainly N&V. SSRI+NSAID=prescribe a PPI. Can increase anxiety initially. Sexual dysfunction.
Fluoxetine SSRI. Depression. Better for young patients. Long half life. Higher incidence of drug interactions. Mainly N&V. SSRI+NSAID=prescribe a PPI. Can increase anxiety initially. Sexual dysfunction.
Sertraline SSRI. Depression. Better in ischaemic heart disease. First line in GAD. Mainly N&V. SSRI+NSAID=prescribe a PPI. Can increase anxiety initially. Sexual dysfunction.
Paroxetine SSRI. Depression and PTSD. Higher incidence of drug interactions. Higher incidence of withdrawal symptoms. Mainly N&V. SSRI+NSAID=prescribe a PPI. Can increase anxiety initially. Sexual dysfunction.
Venlafaxine SNRI. Depression and social phobia. Chills, anorexia, nausea, agitation, dizziness, tremor.
Mirtazapine NaSSA. Depression, and 1st line for PTSD. Constipation, dry mouth, weight gain, somnolence.
Amitryptiline TCA- Sedative. Mainly neuropathic pain and migraine prophylaxis. Very toxic in overdose. Drowsiness, dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, urinary retention.
Dosulepin TCA- Sedative. Mainly neuropathic pain and migraine prophylaxis. Very toxic in overdose. Drowsiness, dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, urinary retention.
Trazodone TCA- Sedative. Mainly neuropathic pain and migraine prophylaxis. Drowsiness, dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, urinary retention.
Imipramine TCA- Less sedative. Mainly neuropathic pain and migraine prophylaxis. Dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, urinary retention.
Nortriptyline TCA- Less sedative. Mainly neuropathic pain and migraine prophylaxis. Dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, urinary retention.
Lofepramine TCA- Less sedative. Mainly neuropathic pain and migraine prophylaxis. Least toxic in overdose. Dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, urinary retention.
Chlorpromazine Typical antipsychotic. EPSE's. Antimuscarinic effects. Sedating effects. Hyperprolactinaemia.
Haloperidol Typical antipsychotic. Has a depo form. Prolonged QT syndrome. EPSE's. Antimuscarinic effects. Sedating effects. Hyperprolactinaemia. Prolongs QT interval
Flupentixole Typical antipsychotic. Has a depo form. EPSE's. Antimuscarinic effects. Sedating effects. Hyperprolactinaemia.
Fluphenazine Typical antipsychotic. Has a depo form. EPSE's. Antimuscarinic effects. Sedating effects. Hyperprolactinaemia.
Olanzepine Atypical antipsychotic. EPSE's, but less so than typicals. Weight gain, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, tardive dyskinesia. Stroke and VTE in older pts.
Risperidone Atypical antipsychotic. Has a depo form. EPSE's, but less so than typicals. Weight gain, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, tardive dyskinesia. Stroke and VTE in older pts.
Amisulparide Atypical antipsychotic. EPSE's, but less so than typicals. Weight gain, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, tardive dyskinesia. Stroke and VTE in older pts.
Quetiapine Atypical antipsychotic. EPSE's, but less so than typicals. Weight gain, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, tardive dyskinesia. Stroke and VTE in older pts.
Aripiprazole Atypical antipsychotic. Less weight gain and sedation. Insomnia and akathisia is worse. EPSE's, but less so than typicals. Neuroleptic malignant syndrome, tardive dyskinesia. Stroke and VTE in older pts. NO WEIGHT GAIN or sedation., but insomnia and akathisia more pronounced.
Clozapine Atypical antipsychotic. NOT 1st LINE. AGRANULOCYTOSIS (1%) and neutropenia (3%). EPSE's, but less so than typicals. Weight gain, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, tardive dyskinesia. Stroke and VTE in older pts. AGRANULOCYTOSIS 1%, and neutropenia 3%.
Lithium Mood stabiliser Weight gain, Leukocytosis, Polyuria/polydypsia, tremor, Headache, Decreased memory, Confusion, N&V, Muscle twitch, Hyperreflexia, Vertigo. Can cause hypothyroidism and hair thinning.
Sodium valproate Mood stabiliser Tiredness, tremors, nausea, vomiting and sedation.
Olanzepine Mood stabiliser EPSE's, but less so than typicals. Weight gain, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, tardive dyskinesia. Stroke and VTE in older pts.
Carbamazepine Mood stabiliser Drowsiness, dizziness, headaches and migraines, motor coordination impairment, nausea, vomiting and/or constipation. Can cause cardiac arrhythmias, aplastic anemia or agranulocytosis.
