adequate adj. enough in quantity or of a good enough quality for a particular purpose [= sufficient; ≠ inadequate] Farmers have been slow to make adequate provision for their retirement.

apparent adj. easy to notice [= obvious] it is apparent (that) It soon became apparent that we had a major problem.
approximate adj. an approximate number, amount, or time is close to the exact number, amount etc, but could be a little bit more or less than it [= rough; ≠ exact] What is the approximate number of students in each class?
attitude n. [uncountable and countable] the opinions and feelings that you usually have about something attitude to/towards Pete's attitude towards women really scares me.
attribute v. attribute something to somebody/something phrasal verb to believe or say that a situation or event is caused by something: The fall in the number of deaths from heart disease is generally attributed to improvements in diet.

code n. laws/behaviour [countable] a set of rules, laws, or principles that tell people how to behave: The Torah is the basis for all the Jewish laws and their moral code.
commit v. crime [transitive] to do something wrong or illegal: Women commit fewer crimes than men.
communicate exchange information [intransitive and transitive] to exchange information or conversation with other people, using words, signs, writing etc: We communicated mostly by e-mail.
concentrate v. [intransitive] to think very carefully about something that you are doing [↪ concentration]: Now please concentrate.
confer v. [intransitive] to discuss something with other people, so that everyone can express their opinions and decide on something confer with Franklin leant over and conferred with his attorneys.
contrast n. [uncountable and countable] a difference between people, ideas, situations, things etc that are being compared: While there are similarities in the two cultures, there are also great contrasts.
cycle [countable] a number of related events that happen again and again in the same order: a woman's menstrual cycle
sex n. [uncountable] the physical activity that two people do together in order to produce babies, or for pleasure: All you see on TV is sex and violence these days.
