Terms that describe the different types of literature
| Term | Definition |

| autobiography | a true story a person write about his or her own life |
| biography | true life story written about someone other than the author |
| drama | a play; writing meant to be acted out |
| essay | a short piece of nonfiction prose that examines a single subject, usually persuasive or expository |
| fiction | prose writing that is made up |
| folktale | often retold by people of a particular culture, full of hyperbole; often has a hero |
| historical fiction | a fiction story that takes place in the past, sometimes centered around an historical event |
| legend | a tale of extraordinary deeds, offten by a hero; may be based on some truth |
| myth | a story to explain what happens in the world that features gods and goddesses or the supernatural |
| nonfiction | any prose writing that deals with real people, places and events |
| novel | a book-length fictional narrative |
| poetry | imaginative writing that appeals to the senses in non-paragraph form |
| prose | any writing that is not poetry, often written in paragraph form |
| realistic fiction | made-up writing that could take place today and seems quite real |
| science fiction | often in the future; characters are able to do things we cannot do yet |
| short story | a short narrative |
| speech | a talk with a message that is delivered orally to an audience |
| tall tale | an exaggerated, far-fetched tale that is obviously untrue but is told as if it should be believed. |
