TermDefinition
illustrate v. to make the meaning of something clearer by giving examples. She illustrated her discussion with diagrams.
immigrate v. to come into a country in order to live there permanently. His father and mother immigrated when he was two.
imply v. to suggest that something is true, without saying this directly. She had not meant to imply that he was lying.
initial adj. happening at the beginning. The initial response has been encouraging.
instance n. an example or single occurrence of something. Importantly, these instances show the direction of the road ahead.
interact vi. act in such a way as to have an effect on each other. Conceptual models are provided that show how these concepts interact with each other.
justify vt. show or prove to be right or reasonable. Ministers must appear before parliament and justify their actions.
layer n. a sheet, quantity, or thickness of material, typically one of several, covering a surface or body. Depending on various factors, you might need to place a layer of base material on top of the sub-grade.
link n. a relationship between two things or situations, especially where one affects the other. Police in Salisbury are investigating links with an armed robbery in Amesbury, after a man was seen with a handgun last week.
locate vt. to find the exact position of something. We couldn't locate the source of the radio signal.
maximize vt. to increase something such as profit or income as much as possible. The company's main function is to maximize profit.
minor adj. small and not very important or serious, especially when compared with other things. We have made some minor changes to the program.
negate vt. to prevent something from having any effect. The problem is that alcohol negates the effects of the medication, and greatly exacerbates my condition.
outcome n(c). The way a thing turns out; a consequence. It was impossible to predict the outcome of the election.
partner n(c). one of the owners of a business. But he acknowledged that each partner shared in the profits of the whole firm.
philosophy n(c) the study of the nature and meaning of existence, truth, good and evil, etc. One of the fundamental tasks of philosophy has always been to determine what belongs to nature.
physical adj. relating to the body as opposed to the mind. The healing takes places on an emotional level, a mental level, and on a body level, a physical level.
proportion n. a part of a number or amount, considered in relation to the whole. The proportion of women graduates has increased in recent years.
publish vt. to arrange for a book, magazine etc to be written, printed, and sold. All three books were published by Heinemann and sales figures for all three reached 50,000.
react vi. act in response to something; respond in a particular way. Rail passengers have reacted angrily to news that fares are set to rise.
register n(c). an official list or record of names or items. Police want a national register of DNA samples.
rely v. to trust or depend on someone or something to do what you need or expect them to do. Many working women rely on relatives to help take care of their children.
remove vt. to take something away from, out of, or off the place where it is. Team members support both of the patient's legs as positioning devices are removed.
scheme n(c). a clever plan, especially to do something that is bad or illegal - used in order to show disapproval. They still thought I had secret plans, evil schemes, and I was at a loss as to how to convince them otherwise.
sequence n. a particular order in which related things follow each other. Number each part of the preparation in a logical sequence that you can follow every time.
