Motivation The force that moves people to behave, think, and feel as they do. Energizes, directs, and sustain behavior.
Evolutionary approach Instincts- innate, biological
Drive reduction theory Drives (arousal state), needs (deprivation), and homeostasis (maintain equilibrium) Need-> Drive-> reduce drive or achieve homeostasis
Optimum Arousal Theory Yerkes- Dodson law (inverted U), over-learning (task becomes automatic)
Gastric signals Stomach contraction, Cholecytokinin
Blood chemistry (hunger) Glucose, insulin, leptin
Hunger and Brain Hypothalamus, Neurotransmitters (serotonin)
Hypothalamus and brain Lateral hypothalamus- initiation Vetromedial hypothalamus- cessation
Maslow's Hierarchy of needs Basic needs must be met before higher needs can be satisfied. Self- actualization ( motivation to develop to our fullest potential)
Three basic organismic needs Competence, Relatedness, Autonomy
Intrinsic motevation Organismic needs + enjoyability. Key to achievement
Extrinsic motivation Incentives (rewards, punishments)
Self regulation The process by which an organism controls behavior in order to pursue important objectives
Delay of Gratification Putting off pleasurable experience, there will be future payoff.
Emotion A feeling that can involve physiological arousal, conscious experience, or behavioral expression
Polygraph Heart rate, breathing, skin conductance level. The rolls do not reliably detect deception
James- Lange Theory Physiological arousal leads to emotion. Perception of the physiological changes.
Cannon- Bard Theory Emotional and physiological reactions occur simultaneously
Amygdala Response
Cerebral hemispheres Left- approach. Right- withdrawal
Two factor Theory Schachter/ Singer Physiological arousal and cognitive labeling
Lazarus Cognitive Appraisal drives emotion
Zajonic Emotions and Physiological arousal precedes thoughts
Paul Eckman Identifying Facial expressions in basic emotion
Facial Feedback hypothesis Facial expression can influence emotions, supports the James-Lange hypothesis
Comparative Perspectives Expression of emotions similar across cultures, display rules do vary across cultures
