argument vocab

TermDefinition
argument opinions that can be backed up with evidence
claim the side of the issue being argued; opinion
evidence information used as proof; facts, data, etc.
counterclaim the opposite of the writer's opinion
fact a statement that is certain and can be proven
subordinating conjunctions words or phrases that connect parts of your writing (because, since, while)
anecdote based on personal observations and experiences; often a brief story
commentary sentences that explain what's important about the evidence and why it proves the claim
audience the people you intend to read your writing
topic sentence the first sentence in a paragraph that explains what the paragraph is about
