| Term | Definition |

| argument | opinions that can be backed up with evidence |
| claim | the side of the issue being argued; opinion |
| evidence | information used as proof; facts, data, etc. |
| counterclaim | the opposite of the writer's opinion |
| fact | a statement that is certain and can be proven |
| subordinating conjunctions | words or phrases that connect parts of your writing (because, since, while) |
| anecdote | based on personal observations and experiences; often a brief story |
| commentary | sentences that explain what's important about the evidence and why it proves the claim |
| audience | the people you intend to read your writing |
| topic sentence | the first sentence in a paragraph that explains what the paragraph is about |
