| idiom | a phrase that cannot be understood from the literal meaning (Break a leg.) |
| simile | comparing two unlike objects using "like" or "as" (Hayes' desk is like a black hole.) |
| metaphor | comparing two unlke objects WITHOUT using "like" or "as" (Emma is a ray of sunshine.) |
| personification | giving nonhuman objects human qualities (The sunshine hugged me.) |
| onomatopoeia | using a word to represent a real sound (bang |
| alliteration | starting words with the same consonant sound (Hayes has a hundred hugs for happy Hannah.) |
| assonance | repeating a vowel sound (Hayes' name is a pain.) |
| hyperbole | an exaggeration used to make a point (This bag weighs a ton!) |
| imagery | creating pictures using words about the five senses |
| rhyme | two or more words that END in the same sound (ray |
| stanza | a group of lines in a poem or song that is separated from the rest of the poem or song |
| haiku | a three-line poem |
| consonant | any letter that is not a vowel |
| figurative language | another term that means "figure of speech" |
| allusion | references a person, character, place, or event |
| pun | uses word play for humorous effect |
