| chemical reaction | a change in which one or more substances is converted into new substances |
| coefficient | a number that represents the number of units of each substance taking part in a reaction |
| decomposition reaction | occurs when one substance breaks down into two or more substances |
| double replacement reaction | the positive ion of one compound replaces the positive ion of another compound to form two new compounds |
| Law of Conservation of Mass | the starting mass of all reactants equals the total final mass of all products |
| product | new substances that form in a chemical reaction |
| reactant | substances that react in a chemical reaction |
| single replacement reaction | one element replaces another element in a compound |
| subscript | number that indicates the number of atoms in a chemical formula |
| synthesis reaction | two or more substances combine to form another substance |
| yield sign | a symbol in chemical equations that means forms or produces |
| precipitate | an insoluble solid that forms as a result of a chemical reaction |
