Unit 2-Chemical Reactions

chemical equation a way to describe a chemical reaction using chemical formulas and other symbols
chemical reaction a change in which one or more substances is converted into new substances
coefficient a number that represents the number of units of each substance taking part in a reaction
decomposition reaction occurs when one substance breaks down into two or more substances
double replacement reaction the positive ion of one compound replaces the positive ion of another compound to form two new compounds
Law of Conservation of Mass the starting mass of all reactants equals the total final mass of all products
product new substances that form in a chemical reaction
reactant substances that react in a chemical reaction
single replacement reaction one element replaces another element in a compound
subscript number that indicates the number of atoms in a chemical formula
synthesis reaction two or more substances combine to form another substance
yield sign a symbol in chemical equations that means forms or produces
precipitate an insoluble solid that forms as a result of a chemical reaction
