Question | Answer |
---|---|
Matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space |
Substance | Is a type of matter with a fixed compostion |
Element | Is made up of one type atom |
Compound | Is a substance in which the atoms of 2 or more elements are combined in a fixed proportion |
Heterogeneous Mixture | Is a mixture in which different materials can be distinguished easily |
Homogeneous Mixture | Is a mixture that contains 2 or more gaseous liquid, or solid substances blended evenly throughout |
Solution | Is a homogeneous mixture of particles so small they cannot be seen in a microscope |
Colloid | Is a type of mixture with particles that are larger the those in solutions but not heavy enough to settle |
Tyndall Effect | Is the scattering of light by colloid particles |
Suspension | Suspension is a heterogeneous mixture containing a liquid in which visible particles settle |
Physical Property | Characteristics that you can observe without changing the identity of the substances |
Physical Change | Change in size, shape, or state of matter |
Distillation | The process for separating substances in a mixture by evaporating a liquid and recondensing its vapor |
Chemical Property | Is a characteristic of a substance that indicates whether it can undergo a certain chemical change |
Chemical Change | A change from one substance to another- Substance changes |
Law of Conservation of Mass/Matter | Matter can not be changed nor destroyed |
List 10 physical properties | Size, shape, color, density, texture, boiling point, cooling point, stretchy, breakable, state of matter. |
Describe how distillation is used to purify crude oil. | You slowly boil the oil and the different substances will separate then the vapor will go through the cold tube and condense, then change the flask and turn up the heat and then do the process again. |
List 5 indications of a chemical change. | Color change, creation of gas, change in properties, change in temperature, precipitation. |
Identifications of chemical properties | Rusting, burning, photo sensitivity |
A change of state is........ (melting, vaporizing) | A Physical property |
