| argument | Taking a position on a subject with the goal to persuade others |
| claim | A specific statement that authors want audiences to accept as true and act on |
| determine | When you understand what the text really says or what the author really means |
| distinguish | Identify qualities that make things different |
| evaluate | When you assess, judge or examine sources |
| evidence | Facts, examples, data, quotations, interviews, or other sources which support a claim the writer makes |
| fact | Evidence that is accepted as true |
| reason | When you use valid, reliable evidence from current and credible sources |
| reliable | Based on reason and sense which is strong and sound |
| trace | When you follow an argument as a text unfolds |
| validity | The quality of one's thinking being logically or factually sound |
