Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space
Atom the smallest particle of an element that retains the chemical identity of the element
Molecule a group of 2 or more atoms joined together by chemical bonds.
Element a pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by physical or chemical means
Compound a substance that contains 2 or more different elements chemically joined and has the same composition throughout
Pure substance a substance made up of one type of matter. (can be element or compound) has constant composition.
Mixture substance made up of multiple types of matter. Has variable composition.
Homogeneous mixture where particles are evenly distributed.
Heterogeneous mixture where particles are NOT evenly distributed.
