Matter Vocab

Matter, Molecules, and Atoms

Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space; cannot be created or destroyed; made up of atoms and molecules
Atoms The basic unit of matter that has a nucleus, which contains protons and neutrons
Molecules A group of two or more atoms held together by a chemical bond
Element Atoms or molecules made up of a single type of atom; has nothing else mixed with it; example: oxygen
Compound A mix of two or more elements; example: H20
Pure Substance A substance made up of one type of matter; can be element or compound; has constant composition
Mixture A substance made up of multiple types of matter; has a variable composition
Heterogeneous A mixture where the parties are NOT evenly distributed
Homogeneous A mixture where the particles are evenly distributed
