Matter, Atoms, and Molecules
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Matter | Something that takes up space and has a mass. Doesn't include things like wind. |
Atom | The building blocks of a molecule. When two or more atoms combine they create a molecule and possibly matter |
Molecule | The item that is created after two or more atoms are combined. Some molecules are matter while others may not be matter. |
Element | An element is a single substance that can be used to create other things. Hydrogen is an element because it is a single element and not a combination of elements. H2O is a combination or two hydrogen and one oxygen. |
Compound | A compound is a mix of two or more elements. H2O is a compound while H is not a compound. H2O is a combination of two hydrogen and one oxygen atoms. |
Pure Substance | A substance made up of one type of matter(can be an element or a compound). Has a constant composition. |
Mixture | A substance made up of multiple types of matter . Has a variable composition. |
Heterogeneous Mixture | A mixture where the particles are not evenly distributed. |
Homogeneous Mixture | A mixture where the particles are evenly distributed. |
