| Barrier islands | Islands that protect the mainland from storms and are made of built up sand. |
| Beaches | The place where the land meats sea usually made of sand. |
| Waves | Repeated movement in the water in up and down motions. |
| Currents | Continuous movements of water in the ocean. |
| Tides | Rising and falling of the water level caused by the moons and suns gravity |
| Neap tides | Lower high tides and higher low tides |
| Spring tides | Higher high tides and lower low tides. |

| Crest | The highest part of the wave |
| Trough | The lowest part of the waves |
| Salt marsh | Large marsh flats in salt water that act as filters. |
| Brackish water | A mix of salt and fresh water usually found in estuaries. |
| Sea level | The level of the surface of the water when there are no waves |
