| metaphor | figure of speech that makes a comparison between two unlike things without using a connective word such as like,as, than, or resembles |
| dialogue | conversation between two or more persons |
| soliloquy | the act of speaking alone on stage talking to him or her self |
| tone | the attitude the writer has in the story |
| mood | the feeling the reader gets when reading |
| allegory | to tell a story |
| simile | when two things are compared with like and is |
| aside | words spoken by a character directly to the audience or another character but not overheard by other onstage in a play. |
| statistics | scientific fact |
| imagery | figurative or descriptive language in a literary work |
| genre | kind, category, or sort, esp. of literary or artistic work |
| foil | character who serves as a contrast to another character |
| monologue | a form of dramatic entertainment, comedic solo, or the like by a single speaker: a comedian's monologue. |
