Intro to Matter

matter anything that has mass and takes up space
chemistry the study of the properties of matter and how matter changes
physical property a characteristic of a pure substance that can observed without changing it to another substance
chemical property a characteristic of a pure substance that describes its ability to change into different substances
element a pure substance that cannot be broken down into any other simpler substance by chemical or physical means
atom the basic particle from which all elements are made
chemical bond a force of attraction between two atoms
molecule formed when atoms combine to make larger particles
compound a pure substance made of two or more elements chemically combined in a set ratio
chemical formula shows the elements in the compound and the ratio of atoms
mixture made of two or more substances that are together in the same place but are not chemically combined
heterogenous mixture a mixture in which you can see the different parts
homogeneous mixture so evenly mixed that you can't see the different parts
solution made up of a solute and a solvent
substance a particular kind of matter with uniform properties
chemical reaction a process that involves rearrangement of the molecular or ionic structure of a substance, as opposed to a change in physical form or a nuclear reaction.
