analogy a comparison of two related things to two other items that have the same relaetionship
hyperbole extreme exaggeration or overstatement for effect
idiom expression that cannot be taken literally; it has a meaning other than it's actual definition
metaphor comparison of two unlike items by saying that one is the other
simile comparison of two unlike things usings the words like, as or resembles
onomatopoeia words that sound like their meaning
personification giving human traits and characteristics to nonhuman things
symbolism an object represents another thing or idea
