Figurative Language

hyperbole use of exaggeration
personification when objects or animals are given human qualites
simile a figure of speech in which two things are compared using the words like or as
metaphor a figure of speech in which two things are compared but do not use the words like or as
idiom words or phrases that cannot be taken literally
imagery words or phrases used to form pictures in a persons mind.
sensory details information that describes what is seen, heard, smelled, tasted or touched
sound effects sounds created to enhance or emphasize the message or meaning of a selection
onomatopoeia the use of a word that has the same sound as the word it represents.
figurative language words that create interesting images using language that has a deeper meaning than the literal meaning of the words.
