| metaphor | a figure of speech in which two things are compared but do not use the words like or as |
| idiom | words or phrases that cannot be taken literally |
| imagery | words or phrases used to form pictures in a persons mind. |
| sensory details | information that describes what is seen, heard, smelled, tasted or touched |
| sound effects | sounds created to enhance or emphasize the message or meaning of a selection |
| onomatopoeia | the use of a word that has the same sound as the word it represents. |
| figurative language | words that create interesting images using language that has a deeper meaning than the literal meaning of the words. |
