Academic vocabulary for author's techniques

| Allusion | reference to history or literature (Biblical references are very common) |
| Diction | Author's word choice |
| Flashback | Going back in time to an earlier event in the story or selection |
| Foreshadowing | clues to future events |
| imagery | pictures created in the mind using the 5 senses |
| irony | opposite of expected happens |
| mood(atmosphere) | reader's emotions or feelings |
| motif | elements repeated in many stories |
| Point of view | Who is telling the story? |
| First person point of view | told by the character using the pronoun "I" |
| 3rd person limited | told by an outside narrator; can only see, hear or think what one character or narrator knows |
| 3rd person omniscient | told by an outside narrator; can see the thoughts and inot the minds of all the major characters |
| Suspense | wondering what will happen next; tension |
| Theme | lesson learned; moral of the story |
