| period | used to end a sentence or after an initial or abbreviation |
| comma | used to separate words or groups of words in a series, to separate an explanatory phrase from the rest of the sentence, to distinguish items in an address and in a date, to separate a title or an initial that follows a name |
| question mark | used at the end of a question |
| apostrophe | used to show that letters or numbers have been left out of a word to form a contraction, or to show the possessive form of nouns |
| colon | used after words introducing a list, quotation, question, or example |
| semicolon | used to join compound sentences that are not connected with a conjunction or to separate groups of words |
| quotation marks | used to frame direct quotations in a sentence, to indicate that a word is slang, to punctuate title of poems, short stories, songs, chapters of books and articles in magazines, newspapers, and encyclopedias |
| single quotation mark | used to punctuate a quotation within a quotation |
| exclamation mark | used to express strong feeling |
