acid Is a compound that produces hydronium ions when dissolved in water
indicator is any substance that changes colors in the presence of an acid or base
base is a compound that produces hydroxide ions when dissolved in water
neutralization the reaction between an acid and a base
salt the negative ions in an acid combine with the positive ions in a base tp produce an ionic compound
pH the lower the pH value the greater the H30+ ion concentration in solution is
Buffer is a solution that is resistant to large changes in pH
electrolyte is a substance that ionizes or dissociates into ions when its dissolved in water
radioactive is the process in which an unstable atomic nucleus emits charged particles and energy
radioisotopes any atom containing an unstable necleus
nuclear radiation is charged particles and energy that are emitted from the nuclei radioisotopes
alph particles is a positive charged particle made up of two protons and two neutrons
gamma ray is a penetrating ray of energy emitted by an unstable nucleus
backround radiation occurs naturally in the environment
strong nuclear force is the attraction force that binds protons and neutrons together in the nucleus
fission is the splitting of an atomic nucleus into two smaller parts
chain reaction neutrons released during the splitting of an initial nucleus trigger a series of nuclear fission
critical mass is the smallest possible mass of a fissionable material that can sustain a chain reaction
fusion the process in which the nuclei of two atoms combine to form a larger nucleus

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
