Energy Vocab
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| potential energy | Stored energy. |
| Kinetic Energy | Any type of energy that is moving. |
| Motion Energy | Motion energy is the energy present in moving things, such as the wind, a racing car, or a soaring ball. |
| Chemical Energy | The energy stored in materials such as food, batteries, dynamite, and gasoline. The chemicals these materials contain determine how much chemical energy they store. |
| Gravitational Energy | The energy stored in objects that are in a position to fall (once the object falls, the type of energy changes). |
| Elastic Energy | The energy stored in stretchy objects. (rubber bands and springs contain elastic energy) |
| Heat Energy (Thermal) | The energy a substance has as a result of its temperature. Higher temp= more heat energy. |
| Light Energy | The energy carried by light rays. |
| Electrical Energy | The energy that electricity provides. |
| Sound Energy | The energy carried by sound waves. |
| Thermal | another word for heat |
| Temperature | measurement of the amount of thermal heat an object contains. |
| Friction | The force resisting relative motion of surfaced that touch. Two surfaces rubbing in opposite directions create friction. |
| Molecule | the smallest particle into which an element or compound can be divided, without changing its properties. |
| Radiation | where heat energy is traveling by invisible waves through space from the source. (sun) |
| convection | the transfer of heat by a moving gas or liquid(steam) |
| conduction | heat moving through a solid. (stove top) |
| Insulators | substances that do not readily allow heat to pass through them. |
