Energy Vocab

kinetic and potential energy. And more energy

TerMAmDefinition
Potential Energy Stored energy of position.
Kinetic Energy Any type of energy in motion
Chemical Energy The energy stored in materials such as food, batteries, dynamite, and gasoline.
Gravitational Energy The energy stored in objects that are in a position to fall. Once the object falls, the type of energy changes.
Elastic Energy The energy stored in stretchy objects.(rubber bands and compressed springs contain Elastic energy)
Thermal (Heat) Energy The energy a substance has as a result of its temperature. higher temperature=more heat energy
Light Energy The energy carried by light rays.
Electrical Energy This is the energy that electricity provides
Sound Energy The energy carried by sound waves.
Thermal Another word for heat.
Temperature The measure of the amount of thermal heat an object contains.
Exothermic Reaction A reaction that releases energy by light or heat.
Endothermic Reaction A reaction in which the system absorbs energy from its surroundings; usually, but not always, in the form of heat.
Extension or tension spring a closely coiled spring made to resist a force pulling in the direction of its length.
Compression spring a coil spring storing energy when closed by a force.
Magnetic Field a region around a magnetic material or a moving electric charge within which the force of magnetism acts.
Magnetic Force attraction or repulsion that arises between electrically charged particles because of their motion.
Mass The amount of matter in an object
