Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space
Mass The amount of matter in an object
Weight A measure of gravitational pull on an object
Volume The amount of space an object takes up
Density A measure of the amount of space between the particles of an object
Atom The smallest particle an element can be divided to and still be the same substance
Proton Positively charged particles in the nucleus of the atom
Neutron Particles in the nucleus of the atom with no (or a neutral) charge.
Nucleus The center of the atom containing protons and neutrons
Electron Negatively charged particles in the atom that move around the nucleus
Electron Cloud The area around the nucleus where electrons exist
Atomic Number The number of protons in an atom
Mass Number The total number of protons and neutrons in an atom
Periodic Table A chart that is an arrangement of elements in order of their atomic number
Chemical Symbol A one- two- or three-letter abbreviation for elements on the periodic table
Average Atomic Mass The weighted average of all the masses of the atom-includes protons and all naturally occurring isotopes
Metal An element that is shiny and conducts heat and electricity well
Nonmetal An element that conducts heat and electricity poorly
Metalloid An element that has properties of both a metal and a nonmetal
Group A vertical column of elements on the Periodic Table
Period A horizontal row of elements on the Periodic Table
