Barnes - characteriz
Terms that describe how an author depicts or shows a character
| Term | Definition |

| Antagonist | character that opposes the main character; usually the "bad" character |
| Direct characterization | author tells directly about character |
| Indirect character | character is shown by (1) what the character says and does (2) what others say and think about the character (3) how others act toward the character |
| Dialogue | characters' conversation |
| dynamic character | character who changes over the course of the story |
| motivation | reasons for behavior |
| protagonist | Main character; usually the "hero" |
| Static character | a character who doesn't change during a story |
