Barnes - characteriz

Terms that describe how an author depicts or shows a character

TermDefinition
Antagonist character that opposes the main character; usually the "bad" character
Direct characterization author tells directly about character
Indirect character character is shown by (1) what the character says and does (2) what others say and think about the character (3) how others act toward the character
Dialogue characters' conversation
dynamic character character who changes over the course of the story
motivation reasons for behavior
protagonist Main character; usually the "hero"
Static character a character who doesn't change during a story
