1st Vocabulary

TermDefinition
reference map a map that shows the geographic locations of places. These kinds of maps usually display boundaries, codes of geographic areas and their names. They also show physical and cultural features that may include roads, rivers, lakes and coastlines.
thematic map a map, much like all of the maps you would see, except that it is unique in what it shows. It will have a main theme, such as weather conditions, or even hotel coverage.
GPS a space-based satellite navigation system that provides location and time information in all weather conditions, anywhere on or near the Earth where there is an unobstructed line of sight to four or more GPS satellites.
Geographic information system (GIS) lets us visualize, question, analyze, interpret, and understand data to reveal relationships, patterns, and trends.
distance scale is used to show distance on a map. The dimensions used by most distance scales are miles or kilometers.
directional indicator also referred to as a wind-rose. It indicates the cardinal directions.
