psychology

chapter 1

what is psychology? the scientific study of behavior and mental process
behavior- overt (can be observed: such as crying)
mental process- covert (cannot be observed: such as remembering)
psychology:the essence of understanding the behavior of us and others personally it is knowing our; strenghts; limitations; boundaries
The essence of who we are- psychological, emotional, physical
psychological- what we think
emotional- what we feel
physical- what we do
Art Combs wrote book Perceiving, Behaving and Becoming
first we percive what we want to aachieve, then we behave in such a manner to achieve, finally after an extended time of behaving in like manner we become what we set forth to achieve
the negative part of perception- stereotype; we begin to supply ourselves with untruths justify it and if we perceive it long enough it becomes reality in our minds
negative side of perception initiate a perception;precipitate a feeling;voice and opinion;establish a view;develope a stereotype;create a percieved reality;formulate judgment;deliver a verdict;rationalize and justify our behavior/actions
waht you perceive may not be real- although if you perceive it long enough, it becomes real to you
change- means that one is leaving his/her comfort zone
change involves 3 things understand, believe, and have personal meaning
to change we have to have the three areas occur and be reinforced repeatedly 8 times to install new behavior; 28 times for bad behavior=20 times to get rid of the old behavior and 8 times to instill the new one
change process understand; believe; meaning
(change) the person must understand what is expected in the behaior change this involves clear communication
(change) the person must believe the need for the behavior change this involves clear comminication of the value of the change
(change) the behavior change itself must have a meaning to the person this involves clear communication of the benefit/reward and/or the consequence/ramification
