Psychology Chapter One Study Aids

Who is Big Papa Wundt & what made him important? Wilhelm Wundt; founder of the first lab & father of psychology who said that this study was of the conscious experience.
Who is Titch the Witch & what made him important? Edward Titchener; believed in structuralism (structures of psuch) & introspection (inspecting inward to one's self).
Who is Free Willi & what makes him important? William James; believed in functionalism (functions of psych) & natural selection (nature & evolution decides your characteristics).
Who is Freaky Freudy & what makes him important? Sigmund Freud; developed psychoanalysis and said the unconscious contains things that are deep down from the surface of consciousness.
Who is JB(ehaviorism)W & what makes him important? John B. Watson; founded behaviorism (observable behavior), redefined psych, studied nature vs. nurture.
Who is Eye-in Ivan & what makes him important? Ivan Pavlov; did a study on stimulus-response in psych with dogs.
Who is Anti-Inner Skinner & what makes him important? B.F. Skinner; said that people repeat actions with positive outcomes but don't repeat actions with negative/neutral outcomes, that free will is an illusion because we are goverened by external stimuli.
Who are the Humanistic Homies & what makes them important? Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow; believed in humanism (which emphasizes the unique qualities of humans)
What are the seven theoretical concepts for psychology? (Bees Pee, Humans Crap, Bears Eat) Behavioral, Psychoanalytic, Humanistic, Cognitive, Biological, and Evolutionary.
What is ethnocentrism? Viewing one's own group as superior and as the standard for judging.
What is evolutionary psychology? When natural selection occurs for behavioral and physical characteristics.
What did Buss, Daly/Wilson, and Cosmides/Toby do? Studied natural selection of mating preferences, jealousy, aggression, sexual behavior, language, decision making, personality, and development.
What is psychology? The science that studies behavior and the physiological/cognitive processes that underlie it. It is the profession that applies the accumulated knowledge of this science to practical problems.
Where are most psychologist working? Private practices.
What are the seven themes of psychology? Empirical, Theoretically diverse, Evolves in sociohistorical context, Determined by multiple causes, Shaped by cultural heritage, Influenced by heredity and environment, and Highly objective experience in the world
What are the nine major research areas in modern psych? Developmental, Social, Experimental, Physiological, Cognitive, Personality, Psychometrics, Educational, and Health.
What four areas of applied psych are there? Clinical, counseling, psychology, school, and industrial/organizational.
What is empiricism? The premise that knowledge should be acquired through observation.
What is a theory? A system of interrelated ideas used to explain a set of observations.
