Sound Vocabulary

| echo | A reflected sound wave. |
| elasticity | The ability of a material to bounce back after being disturbed. |
| density | Is how much matter, or mass, there is in a given mount of space or volume. |
| loudness | Describes your perception of the energy of a sound. |
| intensity | The amount of energy a sound wave carries per second through a unit area. |
| decibel | The loudness of different sounds is compared using a unit. |
| pitch | description of how high or low the sound seems to a person |
| ultrasound | sound waves with frequencies above the normal human range of hearing |
| infrasound | sound with frequencies below the human range of hearing |
| larynx | voice box |
| doppler effect | the change in a frequency of a wave as its source moves in relation to an observe |
| music | set of notes that combine in patterns that are pleasing |
| fundamental tone | The lowest natural frequency of an object. |
| overtone | A natural frequency that is multiplied of the fundamental tone’s frequency |
| acoustics | The study of how sounds interact with each other and the environment. |
| reverberation | The echoes of a sound that are heard after a sound source stops producing sound waves. |
| ear canal | A narrow region leading from the outside of the human ear to the eardrum. |
| ear drum | A small, tightly stretched, drumlike membrane in the ear. |
| cochlea | A fluid-filled cavity in the inner ear that is shaped like a snail shell |
| echolocation | The use of reflected sound waves to determine distances and locate objects |
| sonar | A system that uses reflected sound waves to detect and locate objects underwater |
| sonogram | An image formed using reflected ultrasound waves |
