Genres

TermDefinition
mystery puzzling story dealing with the solution of a crime or the unraveling of secrets
fable short story that teaches a lesson. Characters are often animals that speak.
historical fiction Takes place in the past during a specific time period. story Characters are fictional
fairy tale story about fairies or other magical creatures, usually for children
science fiction Uses Fictional characters often set in the future.
informational provides true facts about a topic. Uses charts, pictures, and graphs.
biography story of a real person's life written by another person.
autobiography story of a real person's life written by THAT person
realistic fiction uses fictional characters set in present time.
fantasy story includes events that could never happen in real life. May include magic.
poetry written to create thought and emotion. Often uses rhyme or rhythm.
tall tales often includes larger than life characters. Type of folk tale that is greatly exaggerated.
myth explains how something in the world came to be. Characters often include gods and goddesses.
legend based on a real person or event, but can not be proven.
