Plot The structure, outline or shape of a story
Character Protagonist: Faces challenge Antagonist: Creates conflict and works against protagonist Minor Character: Have small but specific and important roles
Setting The context of the story. Where and when in takes place, and the mood
Character development How a character changes or grows though a story
Point of View The perspective from which the story is told from
Voice The unique tone and style the author has
Flashback Interruption of the plot to tell the reader about something that happened in the past
Foreshadowing Hints the author gives about event that will happen further on
Symbolism An object used to represent another object, or idea
Conflict The challenge facing the main character
Irony Contrast between appearance and reality
Imagery Vivid, memorable pictures created in the mind of the reader
Suspense Excitement, anxiety, fear about what will happen next
Similes Figures of speech that compare two unlike things using like or as
Alliteration The repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words
Metaphor Figures of speech that compare two unlike things without using like or as
Personification Giving human qualities to non-human things
Onomatopoeia Sound effects in words
Hyperbole Expression of exaggeration
Rhythm The pattern of long and short syllables in a poetic line. Some words are emphasized
Lyrics What poets write, the actual words used to form the framework of rhythm or meter
Mood The feeling that the poem creates
