Poetry is one of the three major types of literature, the others begin prose and drama
Rhythm when words come together, and rhyme
Repetition when a word or sentence is placed more than once within a poem
Stanza A group of lines in a poem that forms a single unit
Metaphor an imaginative comparison between two unlike things in which one thing is said
Personification when you make an object or idea do something only a human can do
Simile a comparison between two unlike things using a word such as like, as,than,or resembles
Symbol the practice or art of using an object or a word to represent an abstract idea
Alliteration The repetition of consonant sounds in words that are close together
Repetition Repeating a word, phrase,line, or stanza multiple times within the poem
Assonance The repetition of vowel sounds in words that are close together
Consonance Repetition of the same, consonant pattern two or more times in short succession
Onomatopoeia Using words whose sounds suggest their meaning
Rhyme The repetition of accented vowel sounds and a sound following them in words that are close together
Meter The pattern of stresses within a line of a verse
Narrative Poetry A poem that tells a story
Haiku Originating in Japan a Haiku is a three line poem which contains seventeen syllables
Free Verse Poetry without a regular meter or rhyme scheme, these poems may use internal rhyme, repetition, alliteration, or onomatopoeia
Lyric Poetry Poetry that expresses the feelings or thoughts of a speaker rather than telling a story
Ballads A song or songlike poem that tells a story
Concrete poems type of Poetry that uses some sort of visual presentation to enhance the effect of the poem
Limericks A very short humorous or nonsensical poem with five lines
Rhyming Couplets Two lines of the same length that rhyme and complete one thought
