Work, Energy, and Pawer

TermDefinition
work The use of force to move an object some distance in the direction of the force.
energy The ability to do work.
power The rate at which work is done.
kinetic energy The energy of motion.
potential energy The energy an object has because of its position, condition, or chemical position.
mechanical energy The energy possessed by an object due to its motion and position.
machine Any device that helps people do work by changing the way work is done.
mechanical advantage The number of times the machine multiplies the input force.
mechanical efficiency A comparison of a machine's work output with the input.
lever A simple machine that has a bar that pivots at a fixed point.
fulcrum A fixed position.
wheel and axle A simple machine that is made of a wheel connected to a smaller cylindrical object, the axle.
pulley A simple machine that has a grooved wheel that holds a rope or a cable.
incline plane A simple machine that is a straight , slanted surface.
